Protecting What Matters Most

Working Together To Raise Your Children

In almost all situations, it is ideal for children to spend considerable time with both parents, and it is good for parents to both play a role in guiding their children to maturity.

I am family law attorney Keith Schulefand and at the law office of Keith B. Schulefand, Esq., I have been helping parents in the Buffalo area find amicable custody solutions for more than 30 years.

Shared Legal Custody

Under shared legal custody, parents are expected to work together to make important decisions about how to raise their children. This includes choice of school, religious upbringing and other important decisions.

Shared Physical Custody

This results in an approximate 50-50 split in parenting time and is increasingly common as a popular custody option. This allows both parents to spend ample time with their child(ren) and does not create the perception of an “A” and a “B” parent, like a more traditional weekday-weekend split.

In a situation with shared physical custody, we can help negotiate a custody agreement that works for both parents and children. This involves resolving issues such as making sure that parents share time during holidays and school breaks equitably.

I have found that agreements reached through negotiation tend to be more durable and satisfying when compared to those resolved through litigation. However, if the other parent is not willing to negotiate in good faith or is not seeking the best interest of your child, I can guide you through the process of resolving issues in court.
