Why do women initiate divorce more often than men?

Some people may find this fact surprising, but New York women initiate divorce proceedings at a much higher rate than men. National statistics indicate that 70 percent of the time, the wife will seek a divorce, not the husband. Why does this occur?

Reasons women seek divorce

Three reasons come to the forefront for women seeking divorce. The first is that many feel that their marriage is holding them back. Women make up just over half of the labor force, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor statistics, yet in many marriages, they must also do the bulk of the housework and the childrearing. The gap is intolerable for women who are career oriented, especially if they make more money than their husbands do. In other instances, the woman’s husband may not support her career goals, which also puts a damper on the relationship.

Secondly, women bear the bulk of the marriage’s emotional side. Many men are still not taught to express their emotions, leading to a lack of communication. Women also tend to receive their emotional support from a variety of sources, allowing them to let go better.

Finally, women are less likely to tolerate bad behavior such as cheating, excessive drinking or substance abuse. Instead of grinning and bearing it, as their mothers may have in the past with fewer financial options, modern women begin divorce proceedings.

Protect yourself and your assets

The bottom line is, if you are in an intolerable situation with no emotional support for what you do, you don’t have to keep living in this manner. Divorce can be lengthy, but when done in the right manner you’ll not only protect your assets but also your future and that of your children. Proper planning is essential.
