KEITH SCHULEFAND: The process itself is different. And it's unknown to most people that walk in. It's their first time involved with a lawyer or court. And generally in life, fear and anxiety come from the unknown. And so in addition to the emotional upset that this change in life is bringing, the anxiety and fear come from just not knowing what it's going to lead to. And so my role as the lawyer is to fill in those information gaps because I believe that in filling in those gaps I can relieve some of the fear and the anxiety.
This is not a game. This is not a contest for me to try to outperform or win or beat the other lawyer or beat the other side. I don't believe that in divorce or custody cases for the most part that they're games that are played to win. I think that when you've reached that point in your life, it's a loss. And both sides really have lost.
So I believe that my role in that process is to try to minimize the loss for my particular client because I don't think that you win at the end of the day. And if you play the game to win, I think the only one that wins at the end of the day is the lawyer and not the client.
