Protecting What Matters Most

More About Family Court In New York

While family court matters are formal legal proceedings, they are also rife with emotion. Money and time spent with children are often at stake. You need a seasoned legal advocate at your side to find resolutions and protect your rights.

I am family law attorney Keith Schulefand and at the law office of Keith B. Schulefand, Esq., in Buffalo, New York, I represent both married and unmarried couples in family court. I often assist with cases that involve:

  • Child support We represent clients looking to secure immediate support prior to a divorce proceeding. Post-divorce actions in family court are common as income and other circumstances change. Unmarried parents also come to us for help in holding their former partner responsible for child support.
  • College tuition The courts will allocate tuition at a state university level, not a private school. Any level of tuition paid out by one spouse will have an effect on other financial payments they must make, including child support.
  • Custody and visitation Following a divorce, ex-spouses many times want to revisit custody and visitation arrangements. Jobs and relationships change, requiring us to aggressively advocate for clients who want to spend time with their children.
  • Relocation When one spouse has a job opportunity or future marriage that will take them out of the state, a family court judge will look at the existing divorce decree and focus on what is in the best interests of the children. Relocation is not automatic.
  • Orders of protection Accusations of violence must be aggressively handled in family court via a family offense petition. Preventing your children from leaving with a relocating spouse can also be addressed through an order of protection.
  • Child abuse and neglect If a Child Protective Services (CPS) report leads to a neglect petition, your family may end up in family court. If you are challenging a petition or perhaps filing for protective custody, we will protect the best interests of your children.
  • Paternity Mothers want to hold the father accountable for child support. Fathers want to spend quality time with their child. Regardless of your need, we will aggressively fight to protect your rights and those of your child in family court.
